“Parting Gesture” was photographed off of Maui’s Olowalu coast. These two adult Humpback whales unexpectedly and simultaneously breached out of the water into my viewfinder after I spent about four hours drifting with these two whales and the mother’s calf (not seen in the photo). Here you see the female on the left and the “male escort” on the right. While the breaches look almost perfectly synchronized, note that is the female’s back and the male’s belly that face the camera.
